Catalog Description: Investigates various types of printmaking techniques including relief print, intaglio, screen, and monotype. Traces the printmaking processes and teaches the proper care of fine art prints.

Technology Expectations: Access to email and internet will be necessary for success in this course. There will also be a Blackboard component to our class, where assignments will be posted, as well as course documents and links. We will use the discussion board (on Blackboard). Assignments on the internet will include researching art styles, multi-cultural art forms, historical and art historical connections. Assignments will also include accessing state and district standards for the visual arts and other subjects as well as finding and refining lesson plans on the internet.
Grading and Class Policies: Evaluation of student work will be based on quality identified by established criteria. Late assignments will be graded down for each day late. Please be reminded that attendance is part of your grade. Please let me know if problems arise. Make sure to turn off your cell phone during our class period.

Tuesday, January 9 – introductions, syllabus review and expectations, Styrofoam relief printing, discussion on personal theme for semester
Thursday, January 11 – continue printing with Styrofoam plate(s), work with mixed media, continue discussion on personal theme
Assignment: before next class assemble mixed media prints; bring images to next class for dry point plate
Tuesday, January 16 – Critique at beginning of class. Introduction to dry point. Decide on image for plate and start incising.
Assignment: Bring printing paper to next class—watercolor paper or Arches, Stonehenge 22”x30”.
Thursday, January 18 – work on dry point plate, printing demo
Tuesday, January 23 – damp pack, print—water-based / oil-based inks
Printing requirement: edition of 10
Thursday, January 25 – print, chine colle demo
Assignment: gather any materials for chine colle
Tuesday, January 30 – chine colle printing. Critique.
Thursday, February 1 – greeting card assignment. Printing plate for cards.
Assignment: Bring in paper for cards to next class, chine colle optional. Finish printing plate to begin printing next class.
Tuesday, February 6 – work on greeting cards.
Printing requirement: 2 sets of 8 cards; + prints for trade
Thursday, February 8 – finish greeting cards.
Assignment: Bring sets of cards to next class; package each set in an artistic way. Bring prints for trade to next class.
Bring image for reduction print to next class.
Tuesday, February 13 – Critique. Reduction print demo. Decide on color scheme. Plan colors using PhotoShop. Print first color. Transfer image to printing block. Carve for second color.
Print Requirement: Start with 15-20 printing papers. For critique, edition of at least 5. Prints for trade.
Assignment: Finish carving for second color to print next class.
Thursday, February 15 – Print second color. Carve for third color. Print third color.
Assignment: Finish carving for fourth color.
Tuesday, February 20 – Print fourth color.
Assignment: Bring edition to next class—signed, numbered. Bring prints for trade to next class.
Thursday, February 22 – Critique. Printing as needed.
Tuesday, February 27 – finish any printing, preparation for presentation of portfolio, matting work
Thursday, March 1 – Portfolio reviews and group critique. Work to include in portfolio: Styrofoam relief prints, dry point edition, set of greeting cards, reduction print edition, 2 chine colle prints

- Speedball water-based block printing inks
- Printing papers (including, but not limited to):
· Stonehenge
· Arches
· Rives BFK Heavyweight
- Tracing paper
- Black Sharpie markers – fine and extra fine point
- Glue dots and UHU glue stick (1.41 size, tinted)
- Roll of blue painter’s tape
